How To Play

Your adventure. Your rules. A quick guide to the quest ahead.

โš”๏ธ What Is Vibe Quest?

Vibe Quest is an AI-powered Choose Your Own Adventure game with RPG mechanics. A Dungeon Master crafts a unique story tailored to your character, your chosen world, and every decision you make. No two quests are ever the same.

You set the theme, the genre, and the hero. The AI handles everything else โ€” narrative, consequences, scene illustrations, even the puzzles.

๐Ÿง™ Creating Your Hero

Before the adventure begins, you build your character:

Hit Surprise Me! to skip setup entirely and jump into a random adventure.

๐ŸŽฒ Stats & The Dice

You have 15 points to distribute across five stats (minimum 1, maximum 5 each). Every action you take triggers a hidden dice roll โ€” your relevant stat adds a bonus or penalty.

The dice roll (1โ€“100) maps to six outcome tiers:

Roll (adjusted) Outcome
1 โ€“ 10Critical Failure โ€” dramatic consequence
11 โ€“ 25Failure โ€” action doesn't work
26 โ€“ 45Partial Failure โ€” complications arise
46 โ€“ 65Partial Success โ€” works, with a side effect
66 โ€“ 85Success โ€” works as intended
86 โ€“ 100Critical Success โ€” exceeds expectations

A Strength-5 hero charging a locked door has a much better chance than a Luck-1 hero who picked the same door to try.

๐ŸŒ Choosing Your World

Pick one or more themes (the world) and one or more genres (the tone). Combinations blend โ€” selecting Comedy and Horror gives you something genuinely unsettling and also very funny.

19 themes include: Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Horror, Western, Cyberpunk, Medieval, Pirate, Superhero, Post-Apocalyptic, Mythology, Space Opera, Steampunk, and more.

16+ genres include: Action, Adventure, Comedy, Drama, Thriller, Mystery, Romance, Heist, Murder Mystery, Film Noir, Survival, Buddy Comedy, and more.

โš™๏ธ Options

๐Ÿ“– The Quest Flow

Once you begin, your adventure unfolds in a loop:

You're never locked to the provided choices. Type anything โ€” the DM incorporates it creatively. Just be aware that jumping off a moving train with no Agility points has consequences.

โค๏ธ Health & Inventory

In action-heavy quests, your character has health points. Take damage, watch the bar drop. Reach zero and the quest ends in defeat.

Items you pick up appear in your inventory. Some have durability โ€” weapons and tools wear down from use and eventually break. The DM tracks all of this automatically and weaves it into the story.

Health tracking is suppressed in pure Comedy and Romance quests โ€” unless you also selected Action.

๐Ÿงฉ Puzzles & Reaction Events

If you enabled puzzles, the DM occasionally triggers a mini-game: lockpick challenges, ciphers, memory grids, riddles, anagrams, and more. Solve it for a bonus outcome. Fail it for a consequence.

Reaction Events add timed pressure โ€” a countdown bar appears and you must choose before the clock runs out. Hesitate too long and the DM decides for you.

๐Ÿ’พ Saving Your Character

Use the Save Character button on the setup screen to store your hero in this browser. Your stats, description, and full quest history are saved.

On your next visit, type MY:YourCharacterName in the character name field to load them. The DM will know what they've been through.

Completed quests are viewable in the Quest Library โ€” replay them, export them as JSON, or just relive the glory (or the disaster).
